Halfway to a lifetime goal

by BEN DROVER

With two years down and two-and-a-half more to go, I’m close to reaching the halfway point in my studies at Hawaii Pacific University (HPU).

Looking back I’ve come to realize how unique and amazing the Fernandez Earle Scholarship Foundation really is—it’s given me the chance to fulfill my goal of attaining a post-secondary education in a place most can only dream of.

Over the past year I’ve completed the last pre-requisite courses for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, and I’ve finally begun taking Level 1 lecture classes. In the coming semester I’ll be taking my first clinical-based courses, which will allow me to apply the knowledge I’ve gained over the past two years in a hospital setting and give me a taste of what my career holds in store for me.

If all goes well I hope to graduate in the fall of 2009 and head back home to the Queen Charlotte Islands to begin my career. After gaining some experience I hope to eventually go back to school and get a master’s degree as a Nurse Practitioner from either the University of Victoria or the University of British Columbia, before continuing my work in the nursing field.

Since first arriving in Hawaii, I’ve come to think of it as my second home, not only because I’ve been living here for the past two years, but also because of the similarities between Hawaii and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Despite being close to 3,000 miles apart, both are closely linked by an intimate connection to the ocean, a strong passion for life, and rich cultural backgrounds.

I’m truly honoured to have received a Fernandez Earle Scholarship as it’s allowed me to experience life in a way most could never even imagine. This experience has been, and will continue to be one which I will forever cherish, as it’s opened the door to the world and shown me the experience of a lifetime. Because of this I’m forever grateful to those involved with the scholarship, as well as those who have supported the Fernandez Earle Scholarship Foundation over the years.

Thank you to those who have made this possible and to those who continue to support the FESF in their endeavours.
