Bursaries help to ease difficult decision

It’s no easy feat giving one high school student over others the chance of a lifetime to study at university in Hawaii—but as with every competition there’s usually only one winner.

This year however, additional bursaries of $2,000 were awarded by the Fernandez Earle Scholarship Foundation toward the education of those finalists who didn’t win, something that hasn’t happened in the past.

The FESF’s esteemed educational award is presented to one high school graduate from the Queen Charlotte Islands every second year and Kniffen says the selection process can be daunting.

“It’s really difficult, an incredibly difficult day.

Not only did the additional $2,000 give some comfort to the FESF selection committee, it also was a pleasant surprise for the students believes Angus Wilson, principal of Queen Charlotte Secondary School.

“They weren’t ‘the’ winner,” says Wilson. “But they’re still a winner.”
