BEGINNINGS AND ENDINGS

The FESF’s first scholarship recipients have come full circle, with the very first about to graduate with a degree in marine biology, and the newest breathing a sigh of relief to have his initial year at university behind him. Learn how all three FESF scholars have had their lives changed—including in ways they may never have anticipated—through the generosity of Roger Earle‘s and Kane Fernandez‘ fishing friends.

Setting her sights on a future
in medicine

by Thea Boserio

The past three years have sped by—it’s hard to believe that it’s almost the end of my third year in Hawaii.

Life on Oahu has been wonderful so far, and working toward a degree in biology has seemed like a whirlwind of fun. This year, school has become much more serious, with classes such as microbiology, organic chemistry, physics, genetics, cell and molecular biology, and marine invertebrates to name a few.

Although these courses have seemed a challenge, they’ve been very interesting and haven’t taken any of the fun away from living in such a beautiful place. Sadly, however my beach time and weekends have been converted into study sessions at the library and hours spent in front of a computer!

The pressure is on right now to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). I’ve been taking a pre-medical senior seminar this year, which is preparing me not only for the MCATs, but also for applying to medical school, which I plan to do after I graduate.

By this time next year I will have earned a four-year Biology degree from Hawaii Pacific University. After that, medical school doesn’t seem too far in the distance. I’m not sure where I will end up, however I do know it will be somewhere in Canada, hopefully on the West Coast—I’ve been looking at the University of British Columbia medical school as an option.

Lately, I’ve been looking into volunteer programs that involve the health sciences. I’m interested in taking a year off to do some travelling before I start applying to Canadian medical schools and I think that volunteering during my time off would be a fulfilling activity.

Right now I’m most interested in volunteering in Uganda, helping with malaria prevention. I hope that by September 2007 my bags will be packed and I’ll be on a plane headed for Africa.

None of this would be possible without the Fernandez Earle Scholarship Foundation, for which I’m so very grateful. The opportunity to study in Hawaii has changed my life in so many ways, and made my dream of some day becoming a doctor that much closer to a reality.

I’ve met many amazing people over the last three years who have helped make me feel at home in Hawaii, and ensured that my experiences were all good ones. Hawaii now holds a special place in my heart, and there are ties here that will last a lifetime!

Thank you to everyone who is making this possible for me.
