A student without bordersby Thea Boserio
Within three weeks of graduation I left Hawaii amid a flurry of tears and returned to the Queen Charlotte Islands. Living in Hawaii has had a huge impact on my life—one that has been further emphasized by returning home. The spectacular beauty of both places, the significant differences and similarities—both environmental and cultural, stand out in ways that I’ve never noticed before. The Fernandez Earle Scholarship has given me the foundation of knowledge and confidence to pursue my career and lifelong goal of becoming a doctor. This summer I will be living in Bellevue Washington, taking a course that will prepare me for the MCATs (Medical College Admission Tests) and get me ready for applying to medical schools across Canada. In November I’ll be leaving to go to Uganda and Kenya to volunteer for a year, working at a malaria clinic. At the moment, the thought that my four years in Hawaii are already over, and a new section of my life is beginning seems unreal. In the back of my mind I still feel like I’ll be returning in September and I know that once the school semester starts up again I’ll begin to feel nostalgic and really miss it. I want to say thank you to everyone who’s been involved with my education over the last four years. I can’t tell you how much of an effect you have had on my life and how much I appreciate it! Thank you again. |
